Thank you to the Members for sponsoring the applications received.
Our committee, chaired by Pete & Sarah Kepic, granted funds to the following:
Wish Upon a Teen
Awarded Program: Project Design my Room will benefit 8 children facing an extended hospitalization situation due to severe illness, organ transplant, or related treatments. This project will provide room makeovers for their hospital rooms.
CARE House of Oakland County
Awarded Program: Imagine that you are a child who has been in the foster care system since you were 10 years old and you are now 17. You entered the system because your father was killed, your mother had substance abuse issues, and you were severely neglected and abused as a result, but you had no other family. To worsen matters, the system in which you have been placed has a social worker shortage and communities are struggling to recruit, train, and retain enough foster families to care for the increasing number of children entering state custody. Many children in Oakland County, Michigan, experience a scenario just like this and do not end up with a loving family that provides them with extended support into adulthood. CARE House of Oakland County CASA employs volunteer advocates who are trained by CARE House professionals to help children and guide them through foster care court proceedings. The intent is to mitigate the frightening process of being embedded in the court system. CASA volunteers are assigned to report to the court on behalf of a child who has been a victim of abuse or neglect. Volunteers come from all walks of life, ages, and diversities, with close to half working at full time jobs. Every CASA volunteer receives training and support from local program staff who have professional backgrounds in the legal and child welfare fields. CARE House CASA also provides coping skills (psychoeducation) so that children may reduce the symptoms of trauma later in life.
The Bottomless Toy Chest
Awarded Program: Tons of Toys is a unique holiday event The Bottomless Toy Chest created for all of our Michigan hospital partners. Our “Elf Squad”, comprised of staff and volunteers, brings the joy of the season to each hospital we serve with tons of toys, crafts, and special treats for patients and their siblings. Everyone gets into the holiday spirit and has the opportunity to experience joy and fun in a place that is so often filled with anxiety and fear. Our Tons of Toys events have never been more important than they are now when families are dealing with the devastating impact of childhood cancer in the midst of an ongoing global pandemic. We are working closely with hospital staff to plan fun-filled events that will be safe and meaningful for patients and their families.
Christ Child House
Awarded Program:Life Skills Training is a necessary program for children in Residential Treatment Care. Having no parents to guide them and living in an atypical housing arrangement, it’s imperative that these children get the training on daily life skills, job skills, manners, cooking skills, laundry skills, and more. Purposefully teaching and reiterating basic life skills to survive and thrive will help these children on their journey when they find their forever home.
Redford Brightmoor Initative
Awarded Program: Redford Brightmoor Initiative (RBI) hosts an annual holiday event called One Stop Shop at the beginning of December each year. At this event, we welcome the Brightmoor and Redford communities to select NEW items for the holiday season. Along with blankets and pillows, small household appliances, groceries, stockings, wrapping paper, coats and more, families are able to choose new toys and other gifts for their children. RBI’s anchor program are Free Stores. We have thousands of shoppers visiting our locations each year. Our stores have clothing, household items, linens, towels, books, and toys – but all items are used. That is what makes One Stop Shop so special – all items given out on this day are new. Parents and children alike look forward to receiving new toys and holiday goodies at this event. In addition, One Stop Shop helps to alleviate the financial stress that families may feel during the holiday season
Awarded Program: Friendship Circle’s Overnight Summer Camp will provide up to four, week-long camp sessions filled with summer camp fun. Each session will welcome a minimum of 40 children with special needs, with each camper fully supported by trained camp staff and volunteers. Campers will participate in fun summer camp activities, including arts and crafts, swimming, games, canoeing and kayaking, nature walks, music, talent shows, paddleboarding, campfires, storytelling, and much more to create memories and friendships to last a lifetime.
Eagles for Children have raised a total of $3.7 million since its first year!
Birmingham Country Club members can be proud of their part in transforming the lives of children in need.
What is Eagles for Children?
The idea of using one great moment on the golf course, “an eagle,” to benefit thousands – or potentially millions of children in need, inspired program co-founders Hal Zaima and Don Kegley to test the Eagles for Children program at Oakland Hills Country Club in 2012. Three other area clubs agreed to join, and by the end of the season, the clubs had raised nearly $40,000, which was awarded to 14 different children’s charities in the Detroit Metropolitan area.
The Eagles for Children concept is simple:
- Each member pledges a minimum of $3 for every eagle scored by fellow members and their families at their club.
- Golfers report their eagles to the pro shop.
- The club’s accounting department tracks the donations and bills each member according to their tax-deductible pledge per eagle.
- At the end of the golf season, a committee from your club meets to determine which children’s nonprofit organizations will benefit from the generosity of your membership. 100% of the funds collected from each club is granted out each season.
